Motorola ROKR E6 review
Motorola has been selling Linux smartphones for a while now, but so far they have only been popular in Asian countries, particularly in countries with a large population that uses the Chinese language. The MOTOROKR E6 was announced exactly one year after the MOTOMING A1200, but as the name implies, the target market is completely different. The E6 is meant for the young who need stronger multimedia functions. Today we will see if the E6 delivers what it promises.
Take note that the MOTOROKR E6 we are reviewing is the China Mobile version, the bundled games and portal/network fine tuning are different from the unbranded version. Strangely enough, this is the only version Motorola Hong Kong had for press reviews. The E6 selling in downtown Hong Kong are free of network branding.
Physical Aspects
The E6’s design hints at that of a black RAZR, from the sharp edges to the button design. The case is bigger than an average candy bar, it’s quite wide and long at 111mm x 51.5mm (4.4″ x 2″); good thing is that the thickness is only 14.5mm (.6″). It is because of the thinness that the E6 is a lot more pocketable than you might otherwise think. The build quality is excellent and the device weight is 121g (4.3oz).
The E6 is completely black. On the front you will find a touch screen that is mounted on the surface, making it completely flat, as opposed to most touch-screen devices on the market today where the rim between the screen and the body tends to collect dust. The only buttons found on the front are the d-pad, a music shortcut key, one customizable shortcut key, and the usual dial/hang up buttons. The layer over the screen is glossy, so it will be a fingerprint magnet. The lower part with the d-pad is made of material similar to that found on the RAZR’s keypad, the backlight color is the same cyan blue and the tactile feedback is good. I noticed that the paint on the edges of the engravings are already starting to peel off after a few days of usage, the screen is fine though – free of any scratches. Flipping to the back of the phone you will see the camera module with its mirror for self-portraits and the manual macro focus switch. Ringtone audio comes out of the grille holes circularly arranged close to the camera. The stylus and the USB port for data and power can be found on the bottom, whereas the standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack can be found at the top.
On the left you can find the volume keys, an SD slot, and 3 dedicated music keys. The camera shutter button and the key lock slider are found on the right side. The arrangement of buttons is logical in general, but the positioning is not the most ergonomic. The key lock slide-key, for example, is positioned too high, as are the volume keys. The dedicated music keys are a bit difficult to find by touch when the phone is in your pocket. It would have been better if they were further apart, or if the engraved icons on them would have been bigger and deeper.
Overall I’m happy with the design of MOTOROKR E6, there is definitely room for improvement, for example the positioning of the keys. It would have been great if Motorola could have reduced the length a bit more, as well.

Motorola ROKR Z6 review
Motorola, Inc., a global leader in wireless communications, today announced its new ROKR brand of music-optimized headsets and handsets, highlighted by the powerful ROKR Z6, which is expected to hit stores in May. Further delivering the best music experience for mobile consumers, the company also announced a unique marketing agreement with Napster to give music fans even easier access to millions of songs on the go.
Style and Substance
Motorola’s ROKR devices unite Motorola’s iconic style, with full MP3 player capabilities, and the seamless capability of a high-quality operating system. Inside the clean lines of the ROKR Z6 is a Linux/JavaTM music phone with Windows MediaTM technologies, including Windows Media Audio (WMA) Windows Media DRM 10, and media transfer protocol (MTP). The ROKR Z6 lets consumers “plug and play” with any personal computer running Windows Media Player 10 or 11. With fast PC direct connectivity via High Speed USB 2.0, the Z6 lets you access music you want simply and seamlessly.
“The new ROKR music handsets are a true convergence of the MP3 player and mobile phone,” said Chris White, senior director, Mobile Devices Multimedia Entertainment, Motorola. “These innovative devices are packed with the features mobile consumers demand today, including easy PC synching and access to hundreds of music stores.”
The ROKR portfolio has a style for every taste and preference – a touch-screen on the ROKR E6 and a slider form on the new ROKR Z6.
Music Masterpiece
The ROKR Z6 music handset delivers the key elements consumers look for in a music phone, including:
Music dedication — Making the easy transition from phone to music and back again, the ROKR Z6 allows one-touch access to your library and pauses music as calls come through.
Put your fingers on the wheel — A touch of the 4-way navigation wheel gives immediate access to content.
High-speed synching — Start rocking fast with High Speed USB 2.0 to side-load songs in 2-3 seconds, almost five times faster than a competitive music phone: that’s a 500 song library in 15 minutes, instead of 2 hours. Synch purchased music from over 200 music stores, including Napster, onto the device from your PC; or side-load tunes from over 200 music stores worldwide – an advantage over most other devices.
Rocks with Windows — The Z6 makes it easy to find and manage songs using Windows Media PlayerTM on the PC, which supports playlists, album art, search by genre, artist and more. It even answers calls while you transfer. The ROKR Z6 works right out of the box; Windows Media Player automatically recognizes the device.
Musical memory — With the external memory slot, load up 2GB microSD cards with your music collection; each holds approximately 1,000 songs and 70 hours of music1 2.
Time to rock — With more than 10 hours of music enjoyment in airplane mode, battery life concerns are history.
Looking to provide the world’s most compelling music experience, Motorola has also created an ecosystem of additional products, accessories and services to support the ROKR family, including headphones and access to a wide array of digital music.
Wire-Free Music Enjoyment
The ROKR Z6 also features stereo Bluetooth® wireless technology3, enabling users to enjoy a wireless mobile stereo experience on the go with compatible Bluetooth-enabled stereo headphones such as the ROKR S9 wrap-around headset3, another recent addition to the ROKR family. The amazing one-ounce S9 provides a tangle-free way to groove to tunes and dance to the music without ever missing a call . For more information, please visit www.hellomoto.com/S9.
Availability
ROKR Z6 will be on sale in Asian markets starting in May. Providing a complete end-to-end music service in China, the ROKR Z6 will download and side-load content from Motorola’s music store, www.motomusic.com.cn. The ROKR Z6 and ROKR Z6m will be available for purchase in Latin America, Europe, North America and other markets beginning in June. For specific regional availability and pricing, contact your local Motorola representative.
Motorola ROKR Z6 Reviews
MobileBurn reviews the Motorola ROKR Z6 and writes, “As it turns out, the Z6 also takes reasonable quality 2 megapixel photos. Photos are captured in portrait mode when the slider is open and in landscape mode when it is closed. The photos are perhaps a bit dark, but show good color and decent sharpness for a fixed-focus lens. My only complaint is that the camera suffers considerably when the light levels get lower. The effective shutter speed of the camera gets quite slow in such conditions, and that makes it difficult to take a decent photo if the subject is moving at all.”
CNET reviews the Motorola ROKR Z6 and writes, “With the Z6m’s camera you can take JPEG pictures in four sizes (2 megapixel, 1.3 megapixel, 640×80 pixels, and 320×240 pixels), and choose from three quality settings. Other features include a self-timer, three color effects, five lighting choices, a 5x zoom, and five shutter sounds (plus a silent option). The camcorder shoots MPEG-4 clips in two resolutions (176×144 pixels and 128×96 pixels) with sound; editing options are similar to the still camera…Photo quality was quite decent. Although some colors were a tad faded, the objects were clearly defined, and our shots weren’t the least bit blurry. It’s too bad there’s no flash–we’d expect one from a megapixel camera–as shots in dim conditions didn’t fare well. On the other hand, the camera picked up a very bright reflection from one of our photo studio’s ceiling lights.”

It comes with a 850 mAh Li-Ion battery which lets you talk for about 7.83 hours and lasts in standby around 300 hours. Its creators added a 1.0 MB memory, enough a normal use! A cool thing of the Motorola W215 is the speaker phone, which is always useful in loud places! The nice screen of this cell phone lets you insert wallpapers of 128 x 128 px.
Motorola has designed its W215 with a 64 chords ringtone player, making a great phone for you to add tons of ringers. The cell phone comes with a calendar which is well designed and Motorola equipped it with a phone book having a contact list capacity of 500. The text prediction system is using the iTAP technology, which is very easy to use. It can also be connected to a computer with a cable to transfer ringtones, wallpapers, etc.
We believe the Motorola W215 to be a great cell phone and we happily suggest it to someone in search of a good phone!

Motorola RIZR Z8 review
Let’s get straight to the point, the coolest thing about the Motorola MOTO Z8 is that it’s.. well.. not straight. Unlike conventional sliders with a simply up/down mechanism, the MOTO Z8 curves inwards so that it is more ergonomic to use, rather like a clamshell phone.
Motorola RIZR Z8 It is a pretty interesting device (if you can get past the “oh no not again” RAZR styling). The MOTO Z8 is a 3G Symbian smartphone with HSDPA (up to 3.6Mbit/sec), 90Mb of internal memory expandable to 4GB using microSD cards, a 2 megapixel primary camera (but without autofocus) and an impressive maximum talktime of 5 hours while on 3G.
There’s a comprehensive multimedia player and stereo Bluetooth support. Motorola’s press department chose to illustrate the MOTO Z8’s multimedia capabilities by slapping on a picture of Johnny Depp for some reason.
Symbian is a little bit of an unusual choice for Motorola. Most of their recent smartphones, including the promising looking ROKR E6 have been Linux devices. Although Motorola have used Symbian in the past, we had almost assumed that they had dropped the operating system entirely.
It’s hard to be enthusiastic about the Motorola MOTO Z8 though, because it’s really just a 3G version of the RIZR, and that’s just a RAZR clamshell phone. It appears that even Motorola were struggling to sell the device, because their press release looks like it has been penned after one too many drinks at the 3GSM Congress in Barcelona, and includes such gems as “Goodbye image. Hello reality.” and “Enabling you to expand your music experience wirelessly, the MOTORIZR lets you set your music collection free … from wires. [It] syncs with your compatible Bluetooth enabled music center wirelessly. Using compatible stereo Bluetooth accessorie you can enjoy your favorite tunes wirelessly without ever missing a call..”. Yeah.. wirelessly.. we got that. (And it’s a relief to find a press department with worse spelling and prose than Mobile Gazette).
If this sort of thing is what floats your boat, then the Motorola MOTO Z8 should be available some time during Q3 2007..
Update: first impressions are deceptive, and we have to admit that the RAZR styling counts heavily against this handset. The Z8 has hidden depths – for example, the Symbian user interface is exceptionally slick and it’s combined with a very high build quality. We understand that the MOTO Z8 was developed by the team that Motorola acquired from Sendo. However, in our view the Z8 has been spoiled by predictable styling and poor launch marketing.
